Back Of Head To Lip

The distance from the back of the head to the lips.

BackOfHeadToLip

How to measure

Application

Used in respirator, oxygen mask, and helmet chin design to position breathing apparatus at the correct distance from the rear of the head.

Posture

Head level, looking straight ahead, lips relaxed and closed.

Landmark

Measured horizontally from the centre of the closed lips (stomion) to the most rearward point of the skull.

Tool

Tape measure.

Assistance

A second person should locate the rearmost skull point and hold the tape end in place.

Common mistake

Measuring to the back of the neck rather than the skull gives a shorter and incorrect result.

API example
