Dorsom Length

The length from the top of the back to the sitting surface.

DorsomLength

How to measure

Application

Used in chair backrest design to ensure lumbar and thoracic support extends the full length of the back from the seat surface to the base of the neck.

Posture

Sit upright on a firm, flat surface.

Landmark

Measured from the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) — the prominent bony bump at the base of the neck — down to the seat surface.

Tool

Tape measure.

Assistance

A second person should locate C7 and hold the tape end in place while measuring down to the seat.

Common mistake

Locate C7 by tilting the head slightly forward first to make the bump prominent, then return to upright before measuring.

API example

Request a predicted value for a 34-year-old woman at the 50th percentile in the United States. Adjust age, percentile, gender, and country to match your design scenario.
