Sitting Hip Breadth

The breadth of the hips while sitting.

SittingHipBreadth

How to measure

Application

Used in seat width design for chairs, vehicles, and aircraft to accommodate the spread of the hips and buttocks when seated.

Posture

Sit on a firm, flat surface with weight evenly distributed.

Landmark

Measured across the widest point of the hips and buttocks as seen from the front.

Tool

Tape measure.

Clothing

Remove bulky clothing around the hips.

Common mistake

Expect this to be wider than standing hip breadth due to tissue spreading when seated. That is correct and expected.

API example

Request a predicted value for a 34-year-old woman at the 50th percentile in the United States. Adjust age, percentile, gender, and country to match your design scenario.
